Personal development, health and physical education (PDHPE) is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.
According to the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), students are expected to participate in PDHPE for 300 hours per year in Years 7 to 10.
PDHPE provides students with opportunities to explore issues that are likely to impact on the health, safety and wellbeing of themselves and others – now and in the future. Students also participate in challenging and enjoyable physical activity, improving their capacity to move with skill and confidence.
In Year 11 and 12, courses available include:
- Community and Family Studies
- Exploring Early Childhood
- Personal Development, Health and Physical Education
- Sport, Lifestyle and Recreation Studies.
This year our PD/H/PE team have been working very hard to create great learning experiences for our students. Students in years 7-12 have been studying various units that have helped them to further develop an understanding of, behaviours relating to improving their health, personal development, and growth. Staff from the faculty have been able to use their expertise to develop authentic learning experiences for our students that has led to them having a stronger understanding of the importance of being a health conscious individual who makes positive and safe decisions by adopting a self-valuing attitude. The faculty has been busy organising experiences for students that involved Road and Driver safety programs, First Aid Training, Coaching sporting teams, Carnivals, Camps, Peer Coaching, Dancing programs, excursions and more. During PE this term, students begun with a unit that focused on the different kinds of dance. Students from years 7-10 studied a dance unit and eventually completed a dance assessment. In week 9 we have our Annual Sports Award achievements where we recognise the wonderful sports achievements from the students at our school.
Some of this terms focus areas have been as follows.
Year 7:Studied a unit called " What happening to me". During this unit students developed an understanding of the changes and challenges that are experienced during adolescence and puberty. Students gained understanding of the reproductive systems and what it means to be a male or female. Students also developed their communication skills and took part in a dance unit which focussed on "Bushdance". Students worked in groups to learn dances like the ‘Waves of Bondi', ‘The heel toe polka' and ‘Strip the willow'.
Year 9:Studied a unit called "Lean on me". This unit focussed on students understanding the importance of having a positive sense of self and understanding the influences on self-image. Students explored stress and management techniques, as well learning to recognise and respond to the different forms of abuse in a positive way. For their tasks, students took a firsthand look at the range of health and support services available in our local area. During PE students focussed on "Line dancing" and performed the popular ‘Nutbush', ‘Macarena' and Country Style ‘Claudette' dances. Year 10:Our term 2 unit ‘Night on the town' focussed on students gaining an understanding of the effects of risk taking be
haviours, safety on the road as a driver/passenger. This unit was further explored in term 3 by allowing students to be spoken to by special guest presenters from the ‘NRMA live, learn, drive program' with an NRMA driving instructor and road safety consultant. In week 7 students attended the ‘BSTREETSMART Program' at the Allphones Area in Homebush, where they got a firsthand insight into the effect our decisions can have when driving or being a passenger. The main focus of term 3 was on a unit that focussed on teaching students to accept diversity called "Dealing with difference". This unit focussed on discrimination and its effects on individuals and communities. Students prepared an oral response based on their understanding of difference and the positive and negative ways that we can deal with difference. Also to finish the dance unit with some fun "Partner Dancing", students learnt ‘the Cha Cha Cha' and the ‘Modern Waltz'. The 9/10 PASS classes have also been focussing on ‘Biomechanical principals that affect our performance' and ‘Current issues in sport'.

Year 11:Our year 11 students have had a very busy term across all of our subjects, PD/H/PE, CAFS, SLR, and EEC. Year 11 was lucky to have all been invited along to attend the RYDA Driver Education program at the Penrith Regatta Centre. The entire grade was able to attend this excursion due to a successful grant application. In PD/H/PE our students have recently studied the First Aid option and completed their full apply First Aid training which was presented by the Surf Lifesaving Academy of Australia. Students in the SLR course attended the local primary schools athletics carnival and assisted by helping to run different events and also presented sports coaching sessions to students from year 7 as part of their assessment task. Students across all these classes have been working hard in the lead up to the yearly exams in week 9. The group will finish the term off by completing their mandatory ‘Crossroads' course, with the majority of the year group attending ‘The Great Aussie Bush Camp' in Tea Gardens.
Year 12:Our Year 12 students have been working extremely hard to get through all of the HSC content and prepare for the upcoming exams next term. PD/H/PE students had the opportunity to attend the ‘Big Day out for PD/H/PE' which consisted of revision lectures in the city. Some students achieved very positive results in the trial HSC across PD/H/PE, CAFS, and SLR. Students will be working closely with their teachers in lead up to their final exams to get their best possible result. Students are reminded to continue to work through past examinations, complete revision questions and most importantly know the content of the syllabus in order to maximise marks. From all the faculty, a sincere Congratulations on almost completing year 12 and best wishes for your upcoming HSC exams.
